Why You Should Consider Doing a First Look

September 24, 2025

Trying to decide if a first look is right for you? This simple choice can have a significant impact on your wedding day timeline—determining when you start getting ready, how long you’ll be in your dress before the ceremony, and how much time you’ll have to soak in the day with your loved ones. While it’s a deeply personal decision between you and your fiancé, we’ve seen firsthand how a first look can bring ease, connection, and even more celebration to your wedding day. Here’s why you might want to consider it:

More time for photos

By seeing each other during a first look, you are able to take care of most photos before the ceremony.  Your photographer can work with you to check off photos of your wedding party (bridesmaids & groomsmen).  If you plan for your family to arrive early, you can get immediate family photos done early as well.  Which leads us to our next point…Enjoy Your Cocktail Hour.

Enjoy Your Cocktail Hour

One of the biggest regrets we hear from couples who opt for a traditional timeline is missing out on their cocktail hour. With a first look, you free up time in your schedule to join your guests, enjoy the signature drinks and hors d’oeuvres you so carefully chose, and actually soak in the joyful energy of your reception. Instead of spending that hour taking photos, you’ll be able to hug your friends, laugh with your family, and start celebrating together—right away.

A Private, Intimate Moment Before the Ceremony

Beyond the logistical benefits, a first look allows you to share a quiet, meaningful moment together before the day sweeps you away. You’ll have time to hold hands, take a deep breath, and truly be present with one another. Many couples use this time to exchange private vows or simply let the emotions of the day settle in before walking down the aisle. If you’re someone who feels nervous in front of a crowd, this can also ease those pre-ceremony jitters and make that walk toward your partner even more exciting.

At the end of the day, your wedding should be a reflection of what feels right for you as a couple. Whether you choose to see each other before the ceremony or wait for that aisle moment, the most important thing is that it’s intentional and meaningful to you. Are you leaning toward a first look, or are you sticking with a more traditional reveal? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
